Task 2 - How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The social group represented in our thriller opening is a middle/upper class groups. The opening presents the audience with a white male who is aged between 20-25 years. This man is shown to be a stereotypical rich white male as he wears a suit which suggests that this person is wealthy and that the character might have a successful career. The dead body is played by a black male, who is also aged around 20-25 years and is also thought to be successful as he is dressed smartly, and it suggests that this person also might have a successful career. Our group has chosen to represent this particular group as we wanted to go for a typical rich white male who does some business related work. We chose a black male to play the role of a dead body as we did not want to add the typical female dead body.

In our opening, gender can be considered as being represented in a stereotypical way. As men are the dominant gender in the opening as there are no women. Furthermore, the representation of the white male is stereotypical as the white male is shown to be a typical rich white male. The man is in a good house and is wearing formal business attire which suggests the person does business related work. Also, the dead body is portrayed by a black male instead of the stereotypical dead female e.g. Psycho (Hitchcock, 1960).

Representation is constructed through the use of technical codes in our thriller opening. As a technical code that does this is rule of thirds. Rule of thirds shows the representation of a stereotypical wealthy white male that might have a successful career as rule of thirds focuses on the suit. Also, rule of thirds can be used on the watch scene, this also represents the white male as a wealthy person as he is wearing an expensive looking watch. It shows that the what male character is either from middle or upper class society. Also, this representation is also shown by the black male who plays the dead body. As the black male is also representing a wealthy person that has a successful career.
