Our final Thriller Plot!!

After having to re think of a new plot for out thriller movie after the constructive criticism of the class pitch, my group and I have finally constructed a final plot for our opening sequence.

After speaking to every group member we have decided to go with a mixture of mine and Ben's Thriller opening ideas, incorporating some aspects of Morgan and Pio's as well. we came to this conclusion as myself and Ben had similar doable ideas, where as going down the route of chase scenes may have been a little too much to film in the short amount of time we have been given,

Plot:
We see a middle aged man in the bathroom, showing and shaving his beard.(The shaving aspect will be a close up as the audience will feel uncomfortable as though they are invading his privacy). he slowly walks downstairs to the kitchen where he prepares himself breakfast and switches on the radio. (Tiptoe through the tulips plays on the radio, an eerie and uncomfortable song with will leave the audience feeling disturbed). as he goes to fill up the kettle, we see the sink is full of knives with blood and served fingers overflowing the sink. The man pays no attention and continues with his breakfast. (Close up oh him eating and drinking). The camera then pans right and left displaying two dead bodies lying dead on the floor. The man looks at them with no emotion (2/3 second flash back to moments before they were killed).  The man fixes his tie in the mirror, picks up his briefcase and exits the front door, slamming it shut(Amplified).

The use of no dialogue and amplified sounds will shock the audience and leave them feeling disturbed and unsettled, wanting to know more about this mysterious psychopath.

Survey/Questionnaire Feedback - Giordano

After making my survey and making it public for people to fill out. I decided to review and respond to my feedback given.

Survey Feedback (Giordano)

Technical - 3 Point Lighting (Group)

Fill light: A supplementary light used in photography or filming that does not change the character of the main light and is used chiefly to lighten shadows.

Key light: The key light is the first and usually most important light that a photographer, cinematographer, lighting cameraman, or other scene composer will use in a lighting setup. The purpose of the key light is to highlight the form and dimension of the subject.

Back light: A light source placed behind an actor, object, or scene to create a highlight that separates the subject from the background.

Health and Safety - Pio George

Health and safety

Health and safety are important aspects in film production, as we need to ensure that we are not putting ourselves in danger when filming our thriller opening.

Audience Feedback Response (morgan)

Audience Feedback Response

Following our thriller opening pitch that was presented to the class we were provided with feedback from our audience, both constructive and complementary...

One of the most impactful queries that was raised was concerning the direction of the film. The concern was with the fact that we were going down such a realistic route and had centred our film based upon other films such as Kidulthood and Adulthood that are known and established in their genre and for having a typical storyline. This may not only decrease the chance of mystery being created in our production but may also lead us to stray from the genre essentially, as it would be more inspired by crime and social realist films rather than actual thrillers.

Several of the questions that arose touched upon the suggestions that our original idea didn't necessarily conform to the thriller genre, from our name - Endz to the plot and the iconography.
Taking on board the suggestion and critiques we realise that we should attempt a fresh production with a completely different plot. We realised that instead of going down the route of a stereotypical film for a collective of West London youths to create we should perhaps go against the grain of what is expected and come up with something much more contemporary, unique and less mainstream.

(La Haine, 1995)

(Taxi Driver 1976)

Thinking forward to what we can conjure i already have ideas derived from films that i know will create a great production. The examples to the left present the premise i think we will go forward with, i think it would be wise to heed the audience's advice and thus we will create a psychological thriller, the two examples aren't necessarily belonging to the thriller genre however they are prime examples of scenes i feel we can create based around a thriller movie. The fact that the characters are both looking at mirrors i feel is an effective tool to connote that they perhaps may have something different about them than others, everyone looks at a mirror from time to time yet i know that we will be able to incorporate actions that the audience will pick up on that will create mystery, tensity and intrigue.

Audience Feedback Response - Giordano

Having reviewed the audience feedback my group and I have decided to change our initial idea completely! All will be explained in my Audio so have a listen and enjoy!!

Potential Thriller Opening - Group Pitch

Pod Cast - Discussing my thriller ideas (Giordano)

In this video I am explaining to my group my two possible opening sequence ideas, I insured that no group members know anything before hand about my ideas. By doing this ios allowed my group to have no preconceptions about my ideas and i would get a genuine response from them in order to help my ideas progress when it came to pitching them to people outside of our group. I got my ideas mainly from action based thrillers. For example 'Kidulthood (2006) Directed by Menhaj Huda inspired my plot of the thriller opening.

  The Royal Tenenbaums (2001, Anderson)
'needle in the hay' (Shaving Scene)

This scene although simple in essence is extremely affective, i feel that we will be able to incorporate this in the opening of our triller as it will be a key scene that will imply there is something not quite   normal with our protagonist. Seeing that we will now be going down a psychological thriller route,
the simplest of scenes will now become the most effective to utilise in our openings.
We don't have to follow the scene exactly as it is performed in this film as we are of course going to take our production in a different direction, for example in the end of this scene the character begins to bleed heavily, however all we require to be effective is just the shaving scene alone.

I believe scenes that incorporate the prop of mirrors for a sustained periods of time are useful at creating suspense and can easily put the audience on edge if manipulated properly, for example a close up of a characters face performing a particular act in a disturbing manor may do this prop justice.

Thriller Ideas - Giordano

Thrillers that are of inspiration to me:

- Legend
- The departed
- Run all Night
- Kidulthood
- Attack the bock
- Adulthood

Location:

As our idea is to have thriller opening based on a british gang including the abuse of alcohol and drugs. Therefore we will be filming in locations such as blocks of flats and school environment. we want to make it a realistic as possible and therefore we will not overcomplicate our filming locations therefore we will keep or locations as to where a typical 16/17 year old boy would live and visit on a daily basis. the typical locations of gangs and crime in London is what my group and i are thinking of when we come to filming our thriller opening, using the gang thriller genre's stereotypical locations such as urban locations.
Block of Flats (London)
London estate

Our thriller Plot:

We would create a film that ha a similar fashion of style to kidulthood and adulthood. a young teenage boy failing at school and no parental guidance is starting to hang around with the wrong crowd. he starts to act differently ad follows in the shadows of his new friends. crime committing and drug taking leads him to being in constant trouble with the police and creating enemies, meaning he constantly has to watch his back.

Top Boy Plot:
The series follows the plight of Ra'Nell as he navigates the pitfalls of living in a crime filled area after his mother, Lisa, is committed to a mental hospital. The story also follows the rise of local drug dealers Dushane and Sully, and the tough decisions they must make to stay alive and in business.

Kidulthood Plot:
the film follows two days in the lives of a group of 15-year-olds from a mixed-income area of West London. The story focuses mainly upon the antihero Trevor, known as "Trife" (Aml Ameen), and Alisa (Red Madrell), his sometime partner. One of the themes of the movie is Alisa's pregnancy. She states that Trife is the father. Trife is most displeased with these developments and he makes it known through absconding from typical fatherly duties to his young flame.

Adulthood Plot:
Six years after being jailed for killing Trife, Sam is released from prison. During the course of the film, it is revealed that Sam has changed dramatically and is not the person he was six years ago. He has learnt from his mistakes and is still haunted by his crime.

Characters:
The film opening will be about the main protagonist along with his gangster friends. However, we will mainly focus on the troubled background of the main protagonist, and why and how he came about to be part of his gang. we will also look at other british gangster movies such as Kidulthood in order to get ideas for our protagonist. the other characters in the opening will be a few of his friends that have influenced him into this lifestyle.

Thriller Opening Ideas (Morgan)

 Thriller Opening Ideas

Inspirational Thrillers

Training Day
Limitless
Attack The Block
Reservoir Dogs
Catch Me If You Can

Location

As we are filming a thriller i think it would be the most practical decision to go down the route of crime and illegal activity thus creating a stigma to a character or set of characters we are basing our piece of filming on. It would make sense to incorperate locations of which live near or grow up in, there are areas that i believe would realistically coincide with my plot.
Typical locations of gangs, cartels and organised crime in london is what im thinking we can utilise when filming our thriller opening, urban locations spring are stereotypical settings.

London Tower Block/Flats (above)                                 London Estate(Right)

Plot

I feel that we can easily create a realistic work of art based upon a drug cartel but focus souly on particular characters in our narrative, similar to that of the television series Top Boy where the lives of several characters from a place called summerhouse in Hackney are represented. It could follow a young man of adolescent age walking through his neighbourhood, giving the audience a good idea of his life and all the responsibilities he is juggling all at once, family life, drugs, school, environment including the trappings of a life of crime and pressures that he faces.

We could start our film in a non-linear fashion, similarly to the way in which the film Limitless (2011)begins. It starts with the main character Bradley Cooper narrating how he ended up in his predicament, moments form his death.

The adaptions we could make are simply tweaking the plot and the change of location/setting. Instead of the top floor of a luxury uptown apartment we could make our film take place in more plausible locations such as West London estates, flats and neighbourhoods.

Characters

I feel that we should base our film around one protagonist, the opening could either show him starting out in his life of crime, establishing his life and story or if we pursue the non-linear idea than it could be him contemplating on how he reached his ultimate demise, which i think would be affective as i think narration as a tool in our production will help to easily tell a story and establish all that the audience needs to know, i also believe that an opening of a thriller starting right at the deep end will instantly put the audience on edge, immerse them in the thick of the action and have them hooked from the start.

Audience Research - BBFC website 2014 Guidelines (Giordano)

                                                       BBFC website 2014 Guidelines

BBFC stands for The British Board of Film Classification and is an independent, non-governmental body which has classified cinema films since it was originally set up in 1912 and videos/ DVDs since the Video Recordings Act was passed back in 1984.

U = Universal, suitable for all
Different children are upset by different things, so it is sometimes difficult to say what might upset a particular child. However, U films should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. If there is any violence, threat or horror in a U film, it should be over quickly and the film should tell children that everything will turn out okay. Films and DVDs for children should make clear to them the difference between right and wrong.

Age rating issues for U
Theme/Topics - Films and DVDs should be about subjects which are generally suitable for younger audiences.

Language – At the most there may be occasional very mild bad language.

Nudity - There can be occasional glimpses of people who have no clothes on, as long as they are not linked to romantic activities.

Sex and relationships - Only mild references (e.g. to 'making love') and mild behaviour (e.g. kissing) are allowed.

Violence and Threat - Mild violence only. Some mild threat and menace is allowed.

Dangerous Behaviour - There should be no dangerous behaviour that can be easily copied by young children.

Weapons - There should be no focus on weapons that are realistic or easy to get hold of.
Horror - Moments with ghosts, witches and monsters should be over quickly and not be too scary. Nothing at U should really frighten or disturb young viewers. The film or DVD should tell children that everything is okay.
Drugs - Drugs should not be mentioned, unless the film or DVD teaches that drugs are dangerous.

Discrimination - There can be no language or behaviour shown that would offend a person’s religion, colour, gender, sexuality or disability, unless the film or DVD teaches it to be wrong.

PG = Parental Guidance

PG films can be viewed by all ages, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children.
Children of any age may watch a PG rated film or DVD, with or without an adult. A PG film should not worry a child aged eight or older.
A PG tells parents that the content of the film may upset younger or more sensitive children.

Age rating issues for PG

Theme/Topics - Films and DVDs may be about more grown up topics such as crime, racism, bullying or violence in the home. There must be nothing which suggests these are good things.

Language - Mild bad language only.

Nudity - Some nudity is allowed, but not if it is linked to romantic activities.

Sex and Relationships - Sex can be mentioned, suggested or joked about, but only discreetly.

Violence and Threat - There can be stronger violence than at U, but without detail. Violence which takes place in a comedy, fantasy, or historical film may be treated less strictly.

Dangerous Behaviour - There should be no detail of fighting techniques or other harmful and dangerous activities that children might easily copy.

Weapons - There should be no focus on weapons that are realistic or easy to get hold of. Weapons should not be made to look attractive.

Horror - Frightening scenes should not be too long or scary. Scary scenes which are part of a fantasy film may be treated less strictly.

Drugs - There should be no mention of illegal drugs or drug taking unless completely harmless, or the film carries an anti-drug message.

Discrimination - There can be no language or behaviour shown that would offend a person’s religion, colour, gender, sexuality or disability, unless the film or DVD teaches it to be wrong or is presented within a film that is educational or showing historical scenes. Discrimination by a character who is seen as a hero by the audience is also unlikely to be allowed.

The 12A requires an adult to accompany any child under 12 seeing a 12A film at the cinema. This is enforced by cinema staff and a cinema may lose its license if adult accompaniment is not enforced for children under 12 admitted to a 12A film.
The 12 is also a simpler system for retailers. It means they cannot sell or rent the item unless the customer is over the age of 12.

Age rating issues for 12A & 12:

Theme - Mature themes are acceptable, but their treatment must be suitable for young teenagers.

Language - The use of strong language (eg 'f***') must be infrequent. Racist language used as abuse is also a concern.

Nudity - Nudity is allowed, but it must be brief and discreet if there is any suggestion of sex.

Sex - Sex can be suggested. Sex references may reflect what 12 year old are likely to have heard about from school, but there should be nothing unsuitable for young teenagers. Frequent rude sex references may not be allowed.

Violence - Violence must not dwell on injuries or blood. Sexual violence may only be implied or briefly and discreetly indicated.

Imitable techniques - Dangerous techniques (eg combat, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on things which can be copied or appear pain or harm free. Easily accessible weapons should not be shown as glamorous.

Horror - There can be some threat and menace, including scary scenes which are intense or last a while. Only occasional gory moments can be shown.

Drugs - Any misuse of drugs must be infrequent and should not be shown as glamorous, or attractive, or teach viewers how to take drugs.

Discrimination - The film or DVD as a whole must not approve of language or behavior that would offend a person’s religion, colour, gender, sexuality or disability. Aggressive use of this type of language and behaviour is unacceptable unless it is clearly disapproved of.

15 = For 15 year-olds and overNo one younger than 15 can go and see a 15 rated film in the cinema. No one younger than 15 may rent or buy a 15 rated video, DVD or download.

General / Age rating issues at 15
15 rated films, videos and downloads can contain strong material including strong swearing, strong horror and strong violence.
More information about 15 rated films is available for parents on our public website.

18 = For adults only
Films, videos and downloads rated 18 are not suitable for children. No one younger than 18 can go and see an 18 rated film in the cinema. No one younger than 18 may rent or buy an 18 rated video, DVD or download.

General / Age rating issues at 18

18 rated films, videos and downloads can contain very strong material which is only suitable for adults.

This can include very strong language, horror, and violence.

To recap...

Overall, this research into the reasons for different age rating has helped me and my group to understand the reasons for why a film is given a certain certificate.
We have decided that our thriller opening is going to a 15 certificated film, as a majority of out ideas for the thriller fall under that age category.
As one of our ideas was to do a drug deal, and excess of drug taking and extreme violence, our only complication will be that this mainly follows under the 18 certificate. however, as a group we can work around that idea to make sure it is definitely a 15 rated film.
